It's good to be alive and working for the King on a beautiful Monday morning! So did any of you catch the VMA's last night? Uhhh yeah, neither did I. So how many of you actually know what the VMA's are? That's what I thought. You probably are better off not knowing.
I have a question for you today. Do you ever suffer from a lack of contentment? Is it just me or does anyone else sometimes allow things of this world to distract in such a way that you lose your contentment? I always think back to the words of Paul: "Actually, I don't have a sense of needing anything personally. I've learned by now to be quite content whatever my circumstances." (Philippians 4:11 MSG) A couple of words stick out there to me. Of course the first one is the word "need." Ohhh, I don't really like that word. I can still remember my Mom saying, "Now, honey, do you really NEED that or do you just WANT that?" My wife does the same thing now so I stopped asking her (Probably not good husband advice). But Paul had learned the difference. I still struggle with it every day. How about you? The other word that stands out here is the word "learned." Paul says that he had learned this which means a couple of things. It means that it wasn't always so for him. There was a time when he was not content . . . like me sometimes. It also means that it took time. Now maybe Paul was a faster learner than I am and maybe faster than you. But even for him it took some time to get there. It didn't just happen overnight. It didn't just magically occur when he trusted Christ. He had to learn it. That also implies it was an intentional act. He had to recognize that this was an issue in his life and he needed to do something about it. And I am going to guess that the process was not always a pleasant one. I'm going to guess that there was some pain involved in the learning process. But Paul had come to that point in his life where he was able to say that he was content whatever his circumstances. I pray today that God would continue to help me learn how to do that. And I pray that you will have that desire to learn the joy of contentment as well!
